How will you flourish this year?
How will you grow your writing and stay connected to your creative self?
Fall is the time to take stock.
It's a time of nostalgia and memory, where stories start to inhabit you. It's a fertile time when your creative voice can flourish. How will you use and grow your creative self this year?
Whether you are working on a manuscript, an article, or journaling, a huge step towards writing is carving out the time and not letting anything else get in the way.
This weekly class will give you a dedicated, consistent time to focus solely on your writing and not let anything else get in your way. And Erica's Sense of Place Approach will keep your writing grounded in the kind of descriptive, memorable details that take your writing from good to great, no matter what kind of place you're writing about.
Let's write together...
Each week you'll be given tools and inspiration to stay with your writing and develop your craft.
The Sense of Place Writing Summer Sessions are designed to keep you engaged in writing. It is the perfect option for anyone craving creative momentum, focus, inspiration, and a high level of support.
If you're ready to develop your writing skills, uncover your stories, generate fresh ideas, and hone your work, this ongoing group is for you. It will give you focused time to apply these tools and do your creative work.
No matter where you are on your creative journey, this framework is designed to meet you there, and give you the support you need to make progress.
Working together, your writing will become more powerful, effective, and polished. Your creative voice will become more defined as a result of this weekly class.
If you’re new to working with me, this will be a nourishing entry point. It will help you start writing and uncovering ideas from a fresh perspective.
If you've taken a class or retreat with me, this will help you hone the ideas you've uncovered into stories and more.
You'll experience feeling being supported by a wonderful group of kindred spirits. You'll get the support and feedback you need to find your stories and polish your craft.
This is for you if:
- You know you have stories, essays, poems, songs, memoirs and more you want to create.
- You know that writing in a group each week keeps you writing and helps you stay on track.
- You want to stay inspired by fresh ideas, prompts and inspiration.
- You want to bring more creativity into your life this summer.
- You want to get unstuck, stay unstuck or just get started again.
- You want tools to polish your writing or craft your ideas and expert mentoring.
- You've tried doing it on your own, and think a small, structured group could help you write better, and more often.
Take a creative journey that will transform you.
Choose from three levels of participation:
Level One: Experience the support of a weekly class that keeps you writing every week. My unique place-based prompts to inspire you to write and discover ideas. All you have to do is just show up and write! Use to generate fresh ideas or hone a project.
Level Two: In addition to the weekly class you'll get 1:1 mentoring with me for focus and feedback. We can go over what you're working on (up to 1,000 words) or talk about the ideas, directions, and themes that are emerging. People say these intuitive sessions are incredibly transformative for taking their writing to the next level.
Level Three: This my VIP level of support. You get the class and the 1:1 AND we really hone in on what you need to grow as a writer right now. Together we create a plan to fit your goals and lifestyle. It will be 100% tailored for you and relevant to your writing style and process. If you really want to grow at your own speed, then this level is for you.
We start with a bonus 1:1 intention setting session. Your additional support could include accountability emails or a quick Zoom check-in. It could include suggested readings and writing challenges. These relevant prompts and readings will be curated for you and meant to help you see how to further polish your craft.
Why Write From Sense of Place?
One thing I know for sure from working with the public and the staff of museums, historic sites, and the National Park Service across the country is this: Everyone has stories of place and belonging, waiting to be remembered and revealed.
Starting with writing about sensory experiences and place-based memories, without fail, opens a gateway of creativity in everyone I've encountered. Finding these stories helps people see the writer they really are inside.
Using sense of place writing as a creative entry point helps you write easily and with increased clarity, depth and meaning. Descriptive, unique details emerge as does your voice as a writer.
And from decades of experience as a recording artist and touring songwriter, creative workshop facilitator, and professional development trainer, I have developed a proven framework of powerful prompts and practices to help you find and craft your writing that I can't wait to share with you.

"You've given me a whole new way of thinking about place.. living in a place where I really don’t feel connected, this process has really helped me come to terms with it, and how that’s okay. I can write about that."

"I highly recommend Erica Wheeler and her writing classes! I have had a great deal of experience writing academic articles and chapters, which in turn meant I had little to no opportunities for descriptive or creative writing. I have not written this much or as easily in my 30+ years in academia. The classes are supportive and keep us actively writing, but also allow us to go at our own pace and take on as much or as little that meets our schedules.”
Julia Clebsch, Naturalist, Park Ranger
"Working with Erica over this past year has moved my writing in directions that I never thought possible. My writing has developed much farther than working alone. It has helped me find my writing voice, and helped my ideas coalesce into a set of connected essays. I find that Erica has a sort of magic to her teaching, where she is more of a guide than a teacher who can pick up on what the class and each individual needs in the way of direction. During class, we share our writing without fear of judgment and integrate positive, constructive feedback when asked. It is a writing journey with others, and they are the best travel companions!”

“I have never taken another writing class, so this was a new experience. I had never thought of myself as a poet, but Erica stating that the rhythm of one of my pieces sounded like poetry opened my eyes. I valued the opportunity to do writing in class and was always surprised when short pieces I wrote turned out to be good."
Shae McWilliams
"I took Erica's class to get back to a regular writing schedule and pick up on writing that I had sidelined a long time ago. Being part of the group was so inspiring! Erica creates a warm and inviting space for participants to use their creative voice without fear of judgment. It gave me permission to use my voice and lean in more to creating a scene through vivid details. I learned to write much more expressively because of it! "
Beth Arrowsmith, Educator, Photographer
"I heartily recommend this class as a place to find your voice and improve and expand your skills. It is appropriate for those with vague goals as well as those with works in progress. Practice blending history, personal experience, theme and descriptions really led to some good solid pieces. Through Erica's focused individual guidance, we were each treated like writers instead of students.”
